Visual Arts
The NYA Visual Arts program covers a wide range of art techniques that students use to express themselves, communicate, mediate their thoughts, and engage in aesthetic study and research. This allows students to explore and establish a sense of self while also developing a grasp of the world around them. We think that creativity and imagination aid in the development of motor skills, social connections, and problem-solving abilities in children. We encourage our students to think critically and creatively through art.
Students are encouraged to respond to their experiences and interact with historical, social, and cultural viewpoints through arts. They are exposed to a variety of creative styles and materials such as collage, drawing, illustration, mask making, painting, papermaking, sculpting, and so on. The emphasis is on experimenting with new materials, color mediums, and cutting and pasting processes. We provide students with the chance to enjoy and study various art forms from throughout the world. They learn about local and global artists, as well as the history of art and art genres from different eras.
Students develop understanding of art elements and design principles and as a result of this exposure, students are able to choose appropriate media and technology to successfully communicate their thoughts on their own. They are encouraged to utilize Visual Arts to express themselves in new and innovative ways not just in art lessons, but also in their homerooms.
New York Academy integrates art across all subject areas, and places an emphasis on art in the Maker Learning program with the Design Thinking Process. We provide all students with an education in art, drama and music.
